Onward to Siberia

9 Aug 2012

It was an action-packed time all the way - up to the point of flying. Last bag check. Passport check. Final round of hugs for family. I heaved an inward sigh of relief when our car sped off to the airport.

It was good to see schoolbus mates, Vijay and Esther, at the airport. Thanks guys for coming!

Special big hugs for my second sister and family who would be in USA by the time I come back.

For anyone looking to get from Singapore to Novosibirsk (for whatever reason), the most straightforward route is an overnight flight to Beijing (Air China) and morning flight from Beijing to Novosibirsk (Siberia Airlines, S7). You get to check through your luggage all the way too.

The flight was relatively uneventful. Except that I misread Gate 15 as 55 on my boarding pass in Beijing Airport, and spent a good 20 mins looking for Gate 55, which was as elusive as Platform 9 3/4 - before resorting to a frantic 10 RMB airport buggy speed ride (past 40 gates) to reach S7 gate on time.

The S7 flight itself was good and smooth. We barely felt the bump on the tarmac when the plane landed, and passengers broke into a round of applause upon landing - a custom on Russian airlines.
